Fishing for Bream or Bluegill
| |
Bream (pronounced "brim"), Bluegill, Kiver, Sunfish,
whatever you want to call it, this panfish is easily caught
and is a favorite fish for kids to catch. Bream are highly
aggessive and have a huge apetite and will hit just about
anything put in front of them. On light tackle they can put
up an excellent fight and you can often fill your bucket
in an hour or two. There are many varieties of bluegill including
several hybrids and this fish can be found in all parts of
the country. |
Catching Bream & Bluegill
Bluegill or Bream, depending on what part of the country you
are from, are abundant in almost every lake, river or pond. Bream
breed and grow quickly and will eat almost anything put in front
of them. (I've caught some of my biggest bream when fishing for
catfish useing chicken breast chunks!)
Bluegill Rods and Reels
Bluegill will eat off the bottom, however they do prefer the
top of the water and are often called "sunfish" for this reason.
A light action rod of 6 feet or less is best with either a push
button bait cast or spinning reel with 4 pound test line. Use a
small size hook with a float rigged about 14-16 inches above the
hook.
Best Bream Baits
Bream or Bluegill will attack just about anything that is put
in front of them. they can be caught with small spinners, plastic
grubs or rubber worms and
are a lot of fun on a fly rod. However the best bait by far is
still live red worms or nightcrawlers.
Where to Find Bluegill
Smaller bluegill will stay close to the banks while the larger
bream will often be found in deeper waters. Although they like
to sun themselves on top of the water, on very hot days or when
the sun is directly overhead you can often find them in the shade.
Cast carefully around stumps and fallen trees - anywhere you would
find bass, as thier habitat and feeding habits are similiar.
Grab the kids, bring a bucket and a few dozen worms and go have
some fun catching bluegill!
