Tarpon Fishing in the Florida Keys
Live Bait Fishing For Tarpon
there are many popular ways to fish Tarpon in Key West. From light tackle to fly fishing, Tarpon fishing always brings excitement. Chum the waters with cut bait or shrimp to get them biting. Live crab makes an excellent bait for tarpon. Multiple hook ups are not uncommon and if you spend a full day fishing you may do some tarpon fishing for part of your day and hook up some Spanish Mackrel, Redfish or Snook in the afternoon.
Lure Fishing For Tarpon
Try spin casting with a plug that sinks and just reel slow near a deeper channels and cuts at dusk. Just remember that Tarpon have a pretty tough mouth so no matter how your fishing, set the hook hard or you'll spend more time counting jumping tarpon than landed fish.
Fly Fishing For Tarpon
If the tarpon are being picky or you want some real excitement, try fly fishing for tarpon! This is an amazing experience especially when done from a kayak. Early in the season try the ocean side flats as the fish will often move in large pods. Some will travel into the backcountry and will tend to stay on deeper flats and in channels. It is not uncommon to be able to hook these on fly and depending on the water color, an olive and black pattern often works well. Remember Tarpon are pretty lazy and they won't go out of their way too much to eat, so you have to drop the fly in front of them.
Tarpon love to "roll" and often "lay up" in the flats. These fish are pretty happy and preform a sort of "dance" by daisy chaining in a circle. Early morning is still a great time to fish for them but they can be found througout the day and even after dusk for a little night time tarpon fishing.
If you never fished Tarpon before in Key West we suggest that you find a Key West Fishing Guide to ensure your trip is exciting and sucessful.
