Northern Pike Fishing Tips & Techniques
Where to find Northern Pike:
Small to medium size pike like to hang out in the back of bays and shallow coves where they can hide in the thick weeds and lilly pads. Often this size pike will be feeding on minnows, frogs, bugs and other small fish. The closer you get to open water, the bigger the Pike will get. Pike are predatory fish and the larger the pike the better the chance of a "big meal" the closer to open water you get.
Big pike generally do not bother with small minnows, frogs and bugs. Their main food is larger fish of other species such as Walleye (their favorite) whitefish or chubs. Big Pike like to hang around areas that lead to bays and coves, especially around rocky points, shoals, islands and other places where there are Walleyes. Check the mouths of streams and rivers for the really big Pike. Walleyes tend to migrate around a lake all year, and where you find Walleyes, your going to find pike.
Northern Pike is one of the easiest fish to catch but they are not found everywhere. Pike like the northern lakes and rivers for the colder waters. Pike will hit just about any lure. The most popular lures for Pike are the "red & silver" and the yellow "five-of-diamonds" DareDevils. Pike also hit jigs, Rapalas and Thundersticks. Some of the biggest pike are caught with small jigs while Walleye fishing. Pike like to play with your bait. Often big Pike will strike several times before you can set a hook. If you get a big pike on and then lose him, just wait a little while and he will hit again. Their appetites are agressive and they will hit again.
Muskie and Northern Pike look very similar so make sure you know your species, bag limits and size regulations for the state you are fishing in.
Baits for Northern Pike
Northern Pike are extremely competitive and like to be at the top of the food chain. When a pike sees a fish chasing another fish, it excites them into a feeding frenzy. With this in mind, take the hooks off your broken Rapala. Then attached a black steel leader. Then attach another leader to the back of the Rapala with a spring-slip-ring. Then attach your DareDevil or what ever you want to use. This rig is another way of triggering that animal feeding instinct. It's an old Muskie fishing trick.
Live bait fishing for Pike means doing a bit of sucker or chub fishing first. find yourself a nice hole upstream in the back bays and coves, use a small hook with a piece of worm and catch yourself some bait. Remember that big Pike like feeding on Walleye, Suckers and Chub in the 1/2-2 pound range. hook these bait fish on a bigger rig through the lip so they can swim and go catch yourself a trophy Pike!
